Since 2007, Chinese Medical Association launched a team to compile the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections. This led to the establishment of the preparatory group of the Infection and Inflammation Group in February 2010 and it became an official group in June 2019.
Professor Chen Shan(Beijing Tongren Hospital Capital Medical University, the then Secretary-General of CUA) was the first leader of the group. He led a number of multicenter studies on urology anti-infection, which ended the history of lack of multicenter research data in urology infection in China. Professor Zheng Junhua (Shanghai Renji Hospital, the Deputy Chairman of CUA) is the current leader of the group. He has led the Infection and Inflammation Group in drafting and publishing papers on expert opinions and consensus of several Chinese experts in the field of urology infection, which has further standardized the diagnosis and treatment of urological infectious diseases. Their work has achieved outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the group.
Under the leadership of CUA, the group adheres to the Three Main Goals which are promoting academic exchange, advancing continuing education and enhancing science popularization; the group has actively carried out following works:
1. Academic Exchange
The group has annully organized a number of academic conferences at a national, or a provincial or a municipal level in the field of urology infection and inflammation. The aims are: improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment of urological infectious diseases, reducing irregular diagnosis and treatment urinary tract infections and antibacterial drugs abuse, and decreasing the incidence of infectious complications during the perioperative period of urology surgery.
2. Multicenter Clinical Research
So far, many nationwide multicenter clinical studies in the field of urology infection have been organized.
3. Academic Publishing
The group has published a number of Chinese guidelines and Chinese expert consensus in the field of urology infection and inflammation: Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Urological diseases in China - Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections, first edition in 2009 and three updates; The Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections - 2015 Edition has become the guiding document for the design of clinical trials of antimicrobial drugs in the field of infection. The Expert Opinions on the Application of Antibacterial Drugs in Patients with Upper Urinary Stones during the Perioperative Period has been on the ranking list of Wanfang Data. The Chinese Expert Consensus on the Prevention of Urology Surgical Site Infection - 2019 Edition ranked first in the Chinese Journal of Urology’s hit ranking list of the year. The group has also organized and compiled the New Edition of Wu Jieping Urology – Chapter of Urinary Tract Infections with a total of 220,000 words. In 2021, the group organized and compiled the Infection and Inflammation of Urinary and Male Reproductive System to present the centennial birthday of the Communist Party of China ending this book will end the history of no professional guide books in the field of urinary tract infections in China. The members of the group were also invited to participate in the compilation of UAA-AAUS Guidelines for Urinary Tract Infections.
4. Advancing Continue Education Work
Aiming at urology specialists and general practitioners in grassroots community, education and training programs have been launched on standardized diagnosis and treatment as well as educational session on the best-practices of rational application of antibacterial drugs in Beijing, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and various other places.
5. Multidisciplinary Exchange and Cooperation
Members of the group have participated in several conferences on infectious diseases of internal medicine, and participated in case discussions and the formulation of antibacterial drug clinical trials.
6. International Cooperation
Members of the group were invited to the KAUTII academic annual meeting in South Korea, the 21st European Conference on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), the 13th Asia-Pacific Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infection (13th APCCMI, formerly WPCCID) and other international conferences.
At the national level, the Infection and Inflammation Group can promote the implementation of the national policy on strengthening the best-practice on rational application of antibacterial drugs and standardized diagnosis and treatment from a professional perspective. At the level of specialist diagnosis and treatment, we can provide urologists with guidelines for the standardized application of antibacterial drugs during perioperative period, which would reduce the incidence and mortality of infectious complications during the perioperative period. At the community-oriented primary medical level, we can provide guidance and training on standardized diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections and the rational use of antimicrobials. The team of our group continues to grow reaching outstanding achievements though shouldering a great responsibility with a long way to go.
